Death twitches my ear.
‘Live,’ he says. ‘I am coming”
Roman poet, Virgil
It is the first day of the new year and I am filled with a mixture of inspiration and restlessness. After a few days of cold weather, today was absolutely spring like. Spring is the season of rebirth and growth. How serendipitous that today of all days would feel this way.
The new year is the perfect opportunity to close the door on the things we would like to leave in the past. And for the first day of 2023 to fall on Sunday is even more perfect. Sunday is usually the day when we have important thoughts and reassess who we are, what we are doing with our life, and what we would like to do with our life. I can attribute part of how I’m feeling today to the song I was listening to earlier, “Good Life” by OneRepublic. There is a part of the song where lead singer Ryan Tedder sings:
Hopelessly I feel like there might be something that I’ll miss
Hopelessly I feel like the window closes oh so quick
Hopelessly I’m taking a mental picture of you now
‘Cause hopelessly the hope is we have so much to feel good about
Good Life by OneRepublic
Regardless of what has happened this last year, I can always find something to feel good about, whether that is spending time with my friends or just listening to a good song. Today is the day for a reset. A day where we can let go of those things that are weighing us down. For me, one of the things that is weighing me down, among other things, is the prospect of a relationship that never materialized. For others, it could be a bad habit or maybe they are just tired of the status quo. They want a change. We all want a change. We made it to today with these things taking up mental energy that could be focused elsewhere. Let’s unpack them together and leave them in 2022. I think we will be pleasantly surprised with what we can achieve with this newfound supply of mental energy. Like the march of time, we will continue to move forward. Forward is where we will find new opportunities for happiness.
