A piece of fiction that I wrote for someone.
We were walking along the path by the pond near the statue of the flamingo that is lit up with green and purple lights. The one where the ducks sit on the stone wall underneath the bridge where we stood that one night at sunset and pointed out the shapes in the clouds that were suspended from the sky like the colorful mobiles on the ceiling that entertained us as children. The clouds were purple and shadowy and contrasted violently with the faded blue sky that was the same color as the pearls on that necklace I bought you from the antique store all those years ago. I saw one that looked like a sailboat and I told you about that time I dreamed we sailed through the sun as it was setting on the horizon and entered a world where the sky was yellow and the water in the ocean was green and the air smelled like citrus. At the end of the boat we saw a brown door that looked like the one that led to the kitchen in the restaurant where we had our first date where the waiters wandered around our table with trays of food and we sat and talked about life and our dreams for the future.
We walked through the door and we were on the patio of the coffee shop that I can’t remember the name of where we sat on the bench and my arm was around you and you held my hand and traced my knuckle with the tip of your finger. You brushed the hair out of my eyes and kissed me for the first time and the fireflies that we thought were stars flickered and flashed and when I stopped rubbing my eyes we were lying down facing each other and our noses were touching and I felt your breath on my cheek and you stirred in your sleep and squeezed my hand and I kissed your closed eyes. I thought I saw a small grin on your lips and when I looked down again the ducks were all asleep and all we could hear was the sound of running water. The sun had completely set and the street lamps that lined the path were glowing yellow and above us the stars looked like the inside of a kaleidoscope. We were leaning against the railing and your head was on my shoulder and you reached up and kissed my cheek. I picked the brightest star from the sky and put it in the palm of your hand. You closed your hand and opened your eyes and the smile you gave me made me dream a little more.
For D.A.
You really take the reader in each sequence of events, capturing all the senses. The romantic tone in this piece is absolutely beautiful! There is also something heartbreaking and relatable about it. Well done!
